The last race of the series proved a bit pointless! after the results were worked out; John Harvey and Ian Bartlett both didn't turn up - even when there was one point in it for first place. Third place which was not certain until Julian Wilkins cleared off one of his poor results. Clearly turning up more often is key as the Personal Handicaps are supposed to average everybody out. Many people who only just qualified had too many poor results still counting. And Rachael Vynne could have one by turning out for just one more weekend.

Overall I am very pleased with how the points column looks; 22, 23, 24, 32, 35, 36, 36, 36, 36 is a very close series compared to conventional scoring; 9, 18, 20, 22, 30, 31, 35, 42, 52.

So Who won and why?

John Harvey and Ian Bartlett had initial PHs which matched their average performances in the series, they were very close and out in front I think because they are inconsistent and turned up often enough to discard the howlers; possibly my PH calculations should take this into account more.

Julian caught me out be having no history - possibly after the first four races I should have adjust the PH. This is always a problem with PHs and membership changes.

Vernon plugged away and is improving all the time - good result.

5th through 9th was practically a tie between five sailors; Blair and Guy did better on average then their Initial PH, but not having any discards was the problem.

Rachel Vynne surprised me with five really good races - where did they come from? Excellent results - just not enough of them.

Its hard to say much about the rest who did not turn up enough; there was one special performance by Bill, and Andrew Appleton in a Xenon was brilliant - Lets see that out a bit more.

Since the whole point of Personal Handicaps is to average out every bodies performance, it follows that anybody who feels "I had a really good race today" should get towards the front of the results, and anybody who feels it was all a bit of struggle to get going will be at the back. Not everybody can get a mid-fleet position every week, so you really do need to have a good race at least half the time. There is also a correlation in the results between those who turned out the most time and the winners! Discards are the key to a good result.

What I'm missing is any feedback on the whole process. I used to have long emails trails and facebook discussions at CSC, which are missing at the SCSC, please tell me what you think. Could you see a link between sailing well and being at the front and not sailing well and being at the back.
